Discover Botubarani: Home of Gorontalo’s Gentle Giants
Since 2016, the Botubarani community has protected these waters, transforming local fishing grounds into a world-class sanctuary for juvenile whale sharks.

From Fishing Village to Whale Shark Sanctuary
About us
Botubarani was once a quiet traditional fishing village in Bone Bolango Regency, facing Teluk Tomini. Everything changed when whale sharks began appearing regularly near the shore, attracted by nutrient-rich waters from a former shrimp processing facility. Instead of seeing this as a challenge, the local community — led by dedicated fishermen — chose a sustainable path. They transformed their village into a community-based ecotourism destination, creating jobs while protecting the marine ecosystem. Today, Botubarani stands as a shining example of how local wisdom and nature can work together.
